LNER Ships

 

The London & North Eastern Railway ran many shipping services throughout its history. Most of these were inherited from the Pre-Grouping companies who ran these services in conjunction with their train services. The LNER inherited the Clyde steamer services from the NBR, the Cross channel steamer service from Harwich to Belgium/Holland/France from the GER and the Immingham services to Northern Europe from the GCR. The NER did not own any major vessels but allowed other shipping lines into their ports in the North East. These ports were connected to the major cities by the profitable and high speed "boat trains"

Other railway companies also ran their own ships, including the LMS Clyde services which ran in competition to those of the LNER. The GWR and SR also serviced the worlds largest shipping lines (such as P&O and Cunard at ports such as Southampton) with connecting services to London.
